Staunton Chiropractic: Why You Have Dizziness or Vertigo After an Auto Accident

woman holding her temples of headAre you experiencing dizziness or vertigo after a car accident? Here’s how our Staunton chiropractic office can help you recover from a whiplash injury.

A car accident can cause a severe neck injury from the sudden back and forth jerking motion of impact. Called whiplash, the ligaments and discs of the neck become injured. This causes inflammation and scar tissue with the nerves in your spine.

These are the same nerves that regulate balance. If they have become disrupted because of a car collision, you become dizzy.

Another cause of dizziness could be your inner ear, which contain tiny crystals. Normally, these crystals press against the nerve endings in your ear, telling your brain about the position of your head.

With a car accident, those crystals are severed and that causes dizziness and vertigo.

A third possibility for vertigo after a car crash is vascular damage. If the blood vessels in your neck are injured, blood flow to the brain becomes restricted.

With this type of injury, the pain is often felt in the back of the head, and the pain grows stronger over time. You will feel the pain on either side of your head, or even in the middle of your head.

Sometimes the pain feels like an ache; other times it feels like you have a rise in pressure. You may also feel a throbbing sensation. You must seek medical attention immediately if you have any of these symptoms because they are extremely serious!

Lastly, dizziness following an automobile crash can be caused by a brain injury. This is more likely if your head struck a dashboard, window, or other object. Symptoms of a brain injury include fuzzy thinking, confusion, dizziness, or memory loss following the accident. Again, please seek medical attention immediately for any of these symptoms.

Typically, though, some of the most common symptoms that accompany dizziness and vertigo are:

  • Headaches
  • Blurry vision
  • Neck pain
  • Stiffness
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Irritability
  • Upper back pain
  • Pain in your upper arms
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Unsteadiness
  • Lightheadedness

Chiropractic helps to repair the broken communication patterns in your neck and brain.

We may also encourage you to have acupuncture and massage therapy for whiplash as well. If you man receiving a massagecan get a massage prior to your chiropractic adjustment, I will need to use less pressure to re-align your vertebrae.

That’s the power of relaxation! It promotes blood flow.

Acupuncture helps to heal the soft tissue injuries while stimulating them at the same time, alleviating pain and improving blood flow.

Chiropractic adjustments will help to re-position your cervical vertebrae and place them back in their proper positions.

As a Staunton VA chiropractor, I have helped many people recover from automobile collisions, and I can most likely help you, too.

To do that, I have to get to the root of the problem and develop a treatment plan that will help restore your neck and head to its pre-collision state.

With chiropractic, you can lessen your dependence on drugs to help you cope with the dizziness. Instead, we’ll treat the cause so you can enjoy life again!
